Dr.
Robert N. Ames
Senior Staff Scientist
Bob Ames received his BS in Botany and MS in Plant Pathology from the Botany
and Plant Pathology Department at Oregon State University. After working as
a Staff Research Associate for a few years in the Plant Pathology Department
at UC Berkley in California, he went on to Colorado State University where he
earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Forest and Wood Sciences. Bob's graduate
research involved the study of plant nutrient uptake and the interactions of
soil microorganisms. Bob has held positions as a Research Microbiologist for
USDA's Agricultural Research Service in California, Manager of Research and
Development for a private plant disease diagnostic laboratory in Washington
state, Registered Sanitarian and Environmental Health Specialist for the Health
Department in Washington, and owned and operated a mushroom farm in Washington
for ten years. Bob also held a pesticide applicators license in Washington and
provided consulting for pest and disease control for landscapes.
Dr. Ames' research and work experience have covered many different aspects
of agriculture. He has intensively studied how soil organisms interact to provide
nutrients to crops and reduce root disease. Bob has authored and co-authored
47 published scientific papers and abstracts. He has been awarded four Federal
competitive research grants totaling over $430,000 to conduct microbiology research.
Dr. Ames joined AMS in February 2002.
